pressKelly’s Stylist Feature Interview for Cristophe Hair Care Blog

1. What inspired you to go into the beauty industry?

Being a person who excels in both left and right brain activities, I was naturally drawn to hair design with its creative, technical and chemical aspects. While studying chemistry and biology at university, I started experimenting on my own hair and then on others’ with cutting, coloring and styling. I had loads of fun becoming the “go to” guy for hair and it was a terribly creative time in my life. I developed such great affinity with doing hair that it superseded my desire to become a scientist. I left college, enrolled in a beauty school and launched a very fulfilling career in the industry.

2. Favorite hair decade?

Hands down the sixties. Particularly the years 1962-67. Hair styling was then at its most creative in over two hundred years. The styles required extraordinary ability to create, and it was tremendously competitive among hairdressers. With simple, elegant hair for daytime, and soaring styles for evening, those women looked chic.

3. If you could be in a movie for a day what would it be? Would you be yourself or another character?

I would be Marcello Mastroianni in the role of Guido Anselmi in Federico Fellini’s 1963 film “8 1/2.” It was Fellini’s eight and a half film, hence its esoteric name. In the film Mastroianni plays a famous Italian film director who’s suffering from creative inhibitions. It’s a dream-like, highly influential classic, full of stylistic references and a true inspiration for people in the hair and fashion industries.

4.  What is the best compliment ever received from a client?

I once did double-process blonding and a haircut for a client which was a fairly substantial change, and when she looked at her result in the mirror she began to cry. I thought she hated it! Then she said through her tears, “It is so beautiful.” That was a very gratifying moment for me.

5. What are three words that define you as a person and stylist?

Versatile, personable, dependable.
